Transit- warehouse, Basel / Münchenstein



Starting position


With the vision of the architects Herzog & de Meuron from 2003, the Christoph Merian Foundation for the area ‘’Dreispitz’’ has initiated a process of transformation. On the grounds of the former warehouse shall be opened by 2014 the city district Kunstfreilager, which includes living, working, learning, arts and culture. The renovated and expanded transit- warehouse is part of the transformation process.

 



Concept


The transit- warehouse will be one of the first buildings on the area ‘’Dreispitz’’, which includes residential living space (residential portion about 55 %). The design by Danish architecture firm BIG (Bjarke Ingels Group), emerged as the winning project from a study contract. The existing four-storey reinforced concrete structure is topped with a three-storey lightweight construction which includes apartments only. The increase is presented in a prominent urban zigzag shape. On the second and third floor of the existing building, the surfaces are mainly designed for modern living and studios, on the first floor for flexible office uses and on the ground floor for commercial uses like restaurants.



 

Implementation


The planning application was submitted in mid 2012. After no objections to the project have been received, a final building permit was granted in April 2013. Thus it can be started with the conversion and extension in the summer of 2013. In about two years of construction, the transit- warehouse should be inaugurated along with the tower of the University of Arts and the new designed ‘’Dreispitzplatz’’.
